A quick update about The Great Mouse Escape
Work progresses nicely on the book, although it progresses in a way I did not initially anticipate.
I knew the book would have some degree of poignancy. It was inspired by the works of Beverly Clearly (who was never afraid to prick the heart) and, particularly, E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web. That book can sometimes be gut-punchingly sad, especially in the ending.
I am now four or so chapters through and it has been…maybe not “gut punchingly” sad, but sad enough for me to step back and say “geez louise, maybe dial it back a bit.”
There’s some levity too, but man…I did not realize how writing about a handful of mice trapped in a lab cage would bring out so much darn pathos!
So far, I’m liking it. We’ll see how it ends up.
